Happy 4th

I'm so grateful for this country of ours.

The other day in the car Dave and I were talking through the history of Independence Day which led to a good little discussion about the Founding Fathers.  As we talked about how they worked so hard to establish a great country, and must have certainly asked God for guidance and help along the way, Claire mentioned it was kind of like a Mom and Dad trying to figure out rules for their family so it could be great.

You're right, Claire.  Loved that little analogy.

And I loved Lucy's prayer that night when she said, "please bless us to remember that the 4th of July isn't just about fireworks and fun..." haha.

We are gearing up for some pretty great "fireworks and fun" tonight, but boy howdy I hope we remember the real deal of why we celebrate this great day.  So grateful for all those who went before to make this country great.  Hoping we can always keep it that way!

  1. Happy 4th. Question---maybe the majority of readers know the answer, but, is "Boy-Howdy" a Utah phrase? Where does it come from and what does it mean, exactly? I had never heard it before, living in the mid-west, until reading your blog. Just curious. Thanks

    1. Oh Rats! I did not double check and my son's account was open. I posted my comment with his account. Bah! Oh well. Ha. Such is life.

  2. I'm not from Utah, I'm from the south, but around here it basically means "oh wow" or just an expression to show great excitement and anticipation. It's sort of a "country" phrase for lack of a better term.

    1. Yes I bet it originated in the South. They say it over and over again in a book called "Cold Sassy Tree" that I read years ago (a really great book BTW), and I think I just kind of "caught" it back then because it kind of expresses a lot of enthusiasm. And sometimes some things deserve a lot of enthusiasm :)

  3. I'm just tasting the last of this great country from the airport in Atlanta. But boy howdy, do I hope we get some fireworks in London soon with the arrival of Charian's baby boy! So excited!
