chocolate chip pound cake {our traditional birthday cake}

One year when Dave and I came home from Virginia for Thanksgiving years and years ago, his sister made him the most delicious birthday cake I had ever tasted.

I got that recipe lickety-split and I swear I have made it hundreds of times since then.
I don't know if that's when it was introduced to Dave's family or if it has been passed down for a lot longer, but it has kind of become a traditional birthday cake for all of Dave's sibling's families now.

It is so darn delicious I figured I better post the recipe here because in my opinion when something is this good, it should be shared.

(Plus I want to be able to look up this easy recipe from anywhere with out searching through my "pride and joy" which needs a little sprucing up lately!)

So here you go:

1 box yellow cake mix
1 pkg. instant chocolate pudding (3.9 oz)
1/2 c. sugar
3/4 c. vegetable oil
3/4 c. water
4 large eggs
1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream
1 c. semi sweet chocolate chips

Combine and whisk together all dry ingredients, add other ingredients and mix until smooth (but don't beat).

Stir in chocolate chips.

Pour into greased and floured bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees for one hour (plus or minus 10 minutes depending on the oven).

And there you have it: the best chocolate chip pound cake you'll ever taste.

**post-edit note: many have asked about the glaze...it's just powdered sugar mixed with a tiny amount of milk (just enough to make it pour-able) and a little vanilla.  Totally not necessary since this cake is so moist and delicious but I usually add it (or just sprinkle with powdered sugar) because it seems to make it look a little more festive.

  2. It's also quite yummy if you substitute the yellow cake mix with a Devil's Food cake mix...that is if you like chocolate. :)

Okay, I have a big birthday party coming up for my three kiddos and I've bee searching for a good recipe, but we are making cupcakes for the guests, so do you know if these would be good as cupcakes? Also, would they taste okay with frosting? We are planning on coloring the frosting and lining the cupcakes up to make a rainbow. Lucy would love it!! ;)

  7. From a lot of blogs and pins on pinterest, I got the impression that Americans mostly use a cake mix instead of mixing flour, sugar etc. themselves. I am not American so is my impression correct or do I just happen to click on certain blogs/pins? And since this is a comment in the www I am not judging, but merely asking.

    1. Yes, you are correct. Most american cakes are made using a mix, or bought pre-made. Fancier desserts are more often made "from scratch," as we say it.

    3. You could google "homemade cake mix" to make your own mix. You should be able to find the measurements to make a mix using your own dry ingredients. Good luck!

  8. love the recipe, also works great with strawberry cake mix with cheese cake pudding mix and white chocolate chips(and the other recipe items)! then just sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with strawberries and whipped topping, yum!

  9. I have one that is similar with chocolate cake mix/chocolate pudding and ganache (whipping cream with melted chocolate) on top. To. die. for. I don't add any sugar though...
