happy birthday Claire

Today my little girl turned eight.Which means she gets to get baptized in a couple weeks and also gets to have the "big talk" asap. (Click here for more about that...I'm actually really excited about it.)

It was a big day I will have to spill out all the details of another time when I'm not so darn tired.

But I couldn't go to sleep without writing what I adore about her.
Because my heart is so full that I get to be her mother.1) I love the spontaneous notes she writes to me...her heart is written right into them in her perfect second-grade writing that slants down the page. She leaves them on my pillow and turns my heart to mush.

2) I love her "big sister" voice that comes out when she is trying to cajole Lucy into doing what she's supposed to. She is extremely persuasive and nurturing. She is the best one in our family at tucking Lucy in bed without any tears.

3) She is a good little athlete and works hard at what she does. She wants do do every sport under the sun. It's too bad her mom can't give into her every whim because she'd probably excel at a lot.

4) She gets straight A's

5) She likes to make sure everyone is included.

6) I love when we are eye-to-eye talking about something...I adore those crystal-clear hazel eyes.

7) She is a leader. She does her own thing and doesn't give in to peer pressure (yeah, I know she's only 8 but it's a good start :)

8) When I pulled her aside for a minute to talk to her about her upcoming baptism tonight I could feel her strong desire to do what's right and her love for her Heavenly Father. I love that.

She makes our whole family so happy.
How grateful we are for this girl.

  1. Happy Birthday Claire! The pictures are beautiful! I love how she is an adorable little athlete but looks so feminine when dressed up. I love her heart too....she's a keeper for sure!

  2. She's a beautiful gem, I adore her little personality that shines in her photos. happy birthday claire!
    she's just perfect!

  3. Ah, the light that's in those photos! It's all about the light- from the sun and from those beautiful eyes on that Claire! Happy Birthday!

  4. Happy birthday Claire!
She looks so much older than 8 in the photos.

  5. Her dress is beautiful! Where did you get it? My daughter will be 8 in September and I'm already thinking about the baptism dress. And pictures!

  6. Happy birthday Claire! Beautiful pictures and words befitting of a beautiful girl :)

  7. A friend just led me to your blog and I haven't been able to stop reading and laughing. It's great. I had to comment on "the talk". When my kids were younger I found your parents book and that led me through age 8 talks with all four of our kids. I bought the picture book, but have never used it, I just couldn't! lol Never the less I am so happy we did, now 14, 12, 10, and 8 our kids all ask us questions and I know they have such a healthy understanding. The only thing my mom ever said to me was the day of prom, "Sometimes boys get excited" That was it! lol

  8. I have a quick question too. My husband and I have 3 girls. 7, 3, and 10 months. My oldest is in the chatty, know it all stage (please say it is a stage!) and my husband sometimes gets really annoyed by it. I can tune it out but at times it really bugs him. Sometimes he feels like it is hard to connect with her because of her constant chatter. Can you offer some advice as to what your husband does to develop an individual relationship with each of his girls Even when they can be a little annoying? We know we have to start young so that the relationship between father and daughter stays strong and healthy. And we also know that it requires some one on one time but some specific ways to get started would be great!

  9. yes, where did you get Claire's dress. It's hard to find dresses that long.
