doctor apts.

Note to self:

Doctor appointments with this girl are not fun.
Oh wait, I already knew that.

I just thought that maybe she'd grown out of the screaming-while-the-doctor-is-trying-to-tell-you-super-important-stuff thing.

I was wrong.

I actually think I'm pretty ok at the art of distraction, but Lu out-does my skills by leaps and bounds in the art of "I-want-what-I-want-when-I-want-it-and-I-do-not-want-a-random-doctor-touching-me."

Despite the screaming I did convince Claire's doctor (through tears) on Tuesday to help me get to the bottom of her issues with another test, and in Lu's appt. this morning I understood enough through the doctor's thick accent mingled with Lucy throwing herself about while wailing that we've found a pretty good new endocrinologist...and that we'll be getting a nutritionist.

So, I guess it was all worth it.

The doctors and nurses with their ears still ringing may have a different opinion...

  1. ....but she is absolutely adorable, so we can overlook the screamin. Easy for me to say, right?!

  2. Ugh, I've so, so been there. It got better when she got old enough to bribe, but it's still hard. Lucy is SO gorgeous though - I love that picture!

  3. De-lurking to hand out some unsolicited advice (sorry), but the single best book on nutritional excellence for kids, hands-down: Disease Proof your Child by Dr. Joel Furhman.

His recommended diet is quite a bit different from what you'd hear from 99% of nutritionists (unfortunately) but his view is backed by hard data and plain common sense. It's amazing how many issues are diet-related... everything from ear infections to constipation.

I hope you get answers you're looking about Lucy's condition soon. I imagine the "not knowing" is probably the toughest part.

  5. Appointments can be really hard, especially when you are meeting someone for the first time. Even more especially when you have to take more than one child with you. Once, my son unbuttoned every! single! button! of the shirt I was wearing while I discussed his sister with two specialists. I was concentrating so hard and it happened so fast that I had no idea....until they both blushed, stammered, and excused themselves. It was mortifying and hilarious.

We've been able to get a lot of help from a bio-chemist/genetecist/MD who specializes in metabolic disease. Apparently he's one of only four in the nation, we're lucky we found him. I can give you more info if you are interested.

  6. Ugh, my 16 mos old son has had so many experiences w/ doctors b/c of his kidneys that now he screams just when they listen to his heart w/ a stethoscope! I've been there too. Just hang in there Mama, you're doing your best.

  8. I really feel for you. Reading your post brought back so many memories of all we went through with my oldest (now 17). It does get better eventually. Until then, hang in there and our family is praying for little Lucy.

  9. I have a suggestion to help Claire's UTI. I don't usually give advice to strangers, but maybe it will help. Have you heard of probiotic use? Basically it is the good bacteria that can be found in yogurt. It also should be living in a normal, healthy body. When we take antibiotics, they kill the healthy bacteria as well as the bad, thus allowing any remaining bad bacteria to re-colonize. If you replace the good bacteria with probiotics, it stops the infection from taking root again. You can get concentrated, supplemental forms of probiotics at a heathfood store. I really think this would help Claire. They are completely safe with no side effects. I've used it with myself and my newborn for some problems we had after she was born. Good luck!
